MARITIME ARCHAIC BURIAL MOUND NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA L’Anse Amour 709-927-5825 www.seethesites.ca | info@seethesites.ca This plaque site of National Historic Significance overlooking the waters of the Strait of Belle Isle marks the burial site of a young Maritime Archaic child who died about 8,000 years ago. Various artifacts were also discovered at the site, including a walrus tusk, harpoon head, painted stones and a bone whistle. An exhibit about the site is displayed at the Labrador Straits Museum at L’Anse au Loup.

Newfoundland and Labrador is blanketed with berries of all colours and kinds. From June to October, you can don your boots, take your bucket and delve into nature’s bounty pretty much anywhere in the province. From service berries (chuckley pear or Saskatoon berries) and blackberries (crow berries) in the spring; to bakeapples, raspberries, wild strawberries, gooseberries and blueberries in the summer; to partridgeberries (lingonberries), cranberries and dogberries in the fall. But it’s not just berries that are ripe for the taking in Newfoundland and Labrador. There’s a smorgasbord of free food, if you know where to look. From mushrooms to dandelions, stinging nettles to fiddleheads, and spruce tips to sea rocket, you’ll be amazed at the variety of flavours our plant species bring to the table. For the trickier ones, such as mushrooms, you really need to know what you’re doing or be sure to forage with someone who does. Where some plants are very tasty and even good for you, some are poisonous and the inexperienced eye wouldn’t know the difference. If you’re more hunter than gatherer, this province has plenty in store for you, too. You don’t need a licence or experience to catch capelin – you just have to be ready to go at a moment’s notice, even under moonlight! Our rivers, lakes and ponds beckon anglers to spend the day trying to lure trout, salmon, pike, Arctic char or whitefish. When the season’s right, take to the sea for a chance to land a cod fish. Closer to shore, you might snorkel for

“We’re here for a good time, not a long time, so have a good time – the sun can’t shine every day.” Trooper, a Canadian band that returned to play in St. John’s time and time again, unknowingly (maybe?) wrote the perfect theme song for a Newfoundland and Labrador vacation. You can’t plan your trip here around pictureperfect sunshiny days with fields of wildflowers blowing in the ocean breeze under an azure sky. You just won’t get your money’s worth. Instead, save certain experiences for those rainy days, when you can be transported to another place and time. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians honour millennia of history. Almost every community has a museum of some size and kind – from a humble fishing premises with a retired fisherman for your guide, to a multi-tiered state-of-theart complex encompassing the whole of the province’s natural and cultural history. There are more than 150 museums registered in the province, with exhibits covering everything from agriculture to
coopering, lightkeeping to nursing, sports to whaling – almost anything you can imagine, and some things you couldn’t have. You could stare down a polar bear, pilot a simulated flight and land a plane, help build a wooden boat, try your hand at filleting fish, or listen to the golden voice of an outport girl-tuned global opera star of the 1890s. Imagine yourself an iron ore miner, a Royal Newfoundland Regiment soldier, an outport nurse, a train conductor or a one-room school teacher. Picture the place you’re standing as it was before Europeans found it, home to various Indigenous peoples who fished, hunted, harvested and thrived here. Learn about today’s Mi’kmaq, Innu and Inuit. tomes stored on a shelf. It’s tangible, three-dimensional, right before our eyes. See artifacts displayed the way they were used – flat-irons atop wood stoves, hand-woven snowshoes next to hunting rifles and harpoons, a two-man saw on a wood horse, a fishing net and a net mender. In some places, you can literally see the past come to life. At archaeological sites, what was long buried is seeing the light once again, and you could be the one to unearth it.
In Trinity, the famous Pageant is a walking historical tour with costumed actors describing early settler life. At L’Anse aux Meadows, Viking interpreters go about their typical c. 1000 AD day in northern Newfoundland and let you tag along. They’ll even tell you tales and sing Viking songs in their longhouse. Just when you think you’ve discovered all there is about Newfoundland and Labrador, the museums prove you’ve only just scratched the surface.

Dr. Henry N. Payne Community Museum, Cow Head In 1809, two men were murdered and another was hanged for the crime. More than a century later, roadwork uncovered the victims’ bodies and the axe presumably used to kill them.

Puffins
Clowns of the Sea
The Atlantic puffin is very colourful with its multi-hued beak, orange feet and red eye markings. But in winter, its beak turns dark and the feathers around the eyes become grey. The colour and shape of its bill changes annually, and brightens again each mating season.
All Puffed Up The name “puffin” is thought to derive from the pudgy chicks or the aggressive territorial behaviour displayed when a male puffs up his body. The bird’s scientific name is Fratercula Arctica.
Bye-Bye Birdie
Puffins produce one egg per year. Both parents take turns incubating it under their wings. When the chick matures, the parents lure it out of the burrow at night. If it gets to the water before sunrise, it’s left on its own and will not return to land again for five years.

Atlantic puffins are camouflaged from predators both above and below. When a whale looks up at a puffin floating on the ocean, the bird’s white breast blends in with the sky. From above, its black head and back blends in with the surface of the water.
Underwater Flyer In the air, puffins can reach speeds of up to 88 km/h flapping their wings 400 times a minute. Under-water they swim much the same way, flapping their wings and using their feet like rudders. They’ve been known to dive as far down as 60 metres or 200 feet.

The thing that most amazes me
about the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism industry is the resourcefulness of the people. On a recent trip through Twillingate and Gros Morne, my partner, Steve, and I were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of pubs, cafés, tea rooms and restaurants we had to choose from. Most surprising, however, was how the locals could turn just about any space into a diner’s delight. At one stop, for example, we enjoyed coffee and a sweet on the wharf of a converted fishing stage. As I sat back in the brightly coloured Adirondack chair, with the warm scent of salt water and creosote wafting past, I couldn’t help but giggle at the conversation taking place at the counter behind me.

“I think I will try one of your scones,” said Steve (a born and bred mainlander), to the employee. “Sorry, sir, we don’t have any scones,” replied the lady serving him. “Isn’t that a scone?” he asked, pointing to one of several baked goodies. “No, me duckie,” was her reply. “That’s a raison tea bun.” At another stop, a lovely couple had turned their garage into a delightful tea room where tourists flocked for the assortment of baked goods and homemade jams. I could easily envision how, at the end of the tourist season, the space would once again be used to store the snowblower, lawn mower and ATV. The best lobster roll ever to cross my lips was served in the back room of an old general store, appropriately named The Back Room. It was the type of general store where you could find anything from catgut, to cabbages to condoms. The dining area consisted of a couple of chrome table sets with a stack of Downhome magazines to keep the customers entertained while they waited. I imagined that The Back Room reverted back to Nan’s craft room as soon as tourist season ended. Steve actually plans our road trips around coffee stops, so he was feeling kind of antsy as we drove through the northern part of Gros Morne National Park with nar a café in sight. Then, to our relief, we spotted a large green saltbox house with the door wide open and about a dozen people leaving and boarding their cars. “Perfect timing, Steve, looks like the tourists are just pulling out,” I said, noting the Alberta licence plates on several of the cars. Once again, I smiled at the resourcefulness of the locals. To the untrained eye, this café could have passed for an www.exploredownhome.com
ordinary dining room, except for the super-sized wooden table set for 16 people. As we seated ourselves an elderly woman emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands in her apron. “Can I help you?” she asked. “Just wondering if you have espresso?” Steve cautiously inquired. “No, I’m sorry,” she replied with a smile. “But I can get ye a tea or coffee.” We both ordered a coffee, and she proceeded to set out the table with a tin of Carnation milk, a sugar bowl, thick slices of homemade bread and an assortment of local jams. I felt proud that Steve would get to experience an authentic Newfoundland “mug-up.” Unlike any other dining establishment we had visited, the matron actually sat with us and poured herself a cup of Tetley as she entertained us with stories about the history of her small town. What hospitality! “I got my crowd reared up now,” she said. “Most of them lives out west in Fort McMurray, but they are all home now for their cousin’s wedding up in Cow Head. They brought back a bunch of their friends with them and they are staying here, too.” Genius! I thought. She has converted her empty bedrooms into a B&B! “Is there anything else I can get ye?” she asked, as I wiped the last spot of bakeapple jam from the corner of my lip. “Just the bill,” Steve said. “The bill?” She looked at us with a blank stare. “Do we pay here or at the counter?” I asked. Getting Your Boat Ready Before you launch your boat for the first time this summer, read over this checklist.
❏ Clean the boat inside and out. Wash the exterior with proper fibreglass cleaner; regular household cleaners could scratch the surface. Finish with a coat of wax.
❏ Remove distributor cap, clean it and reinstall it properly.
❏ Inspect the steering system and lubricate where necessary.
❏ Inspect the hull, seats and other vinyl/canvas surfaces for cracks, tears and mildew. Repair and clean surfaces with the proper cleaner.
❏ Replace the gas, change the engine oil and oil/fuel filter, and refill the cooling system.
❏ Examine the fuel line and hoses for cracks. ❏ Reinstall all batteries that you took out for the winter. Make sure they’re fully charged. If necessary, top up battery fluids with distilled water.

❏ Start the engine and make sure it is running smoothly before taking your first trip. Check all the gauges.
❏ Reconnect all electronics that were disconnected over the winter (eg. GPS, radio etc.) and test that they’re working properly.
❏ Make sure all safety equipment (eg. lifejackets, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, emergency flares etc.) is in good condition and securely stowed.
